Balancing Self Care and Self Improvement | #5

Summary

You know deep down what you want out of your life. You can hear the little voice saying “no, not this” even if you don’t know what to do about it. My job as a coach is to help you find out what makes the little voice say “yes!” It may seem counterintuitive, but I’m not always pushing my clients to rack up achievements and cross things off their to-do list. First, we work on mindset and self care — because if you burn out, I’m not doing my job to help you balance your goals with your life.

In this episode I explain the pillars of my coaching practice: Self improvement (goal setting, confidence, productivity), self care (recovering from burnout, rest, mind-body-spirit), mental health (including neurodivergence), relationships (boundary setting, communication, and being willing to ask for help), and social justice (being aware of the structures and systems that pose challenges to your success).

Here’s an article about the study I referenced about the rates at which men and women apply to jobs — there’s more to it!

How I Finally Said Yes to Myself | #2

Summary

This episode dives into my own experiences that left me burned out: having to cut off both of my biological parents, losing my stepdad to cancer in an especially traumatic way, leaving an abusive marriage, and giving my notice at a toxic job after a last straw moment. I’ve always stuck it out and made myself endure harmful situations until I couldn’t stand it anymore — until I finally learned how to follow my intuition to the next right thing for me instead of having to rush and panic. And I want that for you too!

Motivation is NOT Like a Muffin | #3

Summary

CW: Eating disorder, diet culture, weight loss

I love personal development books about business, confidence, motivation, everything — but one thing I hate about them is that they almost always end up making a reference to dieting when they’re trying to make a point about consistent habits. When I started recovery from ED I started seeing how pervasive diet culture messages are everywhere. They’re on TV, in books, even in self help books that have nothing to do with food or dieting or health. For this reason, I will never compare motivation or habit building to food, dieting, or exercise. Dieting and mindset work are NOT the same thing.

Check out Caroline Dooner’s The Fuck It Diet, if you have a body and/or eat food.
